Polishing concrete is similar to sanding wood except you are sanding concrete flooring. Heavy-duty polishing machines equipped with diamond-impregnated segments are used to grind down concrete flooring surfaces using finer grits with each pass. With each pass, usually totalling 8-12, the concrete surface will get smoother and shinier.
The first pass may start with a 40 grit coarse diamond segment bonded in a metallic matrix which removes the top surfaces and exposes some aggregate. This first grind removes minor pits, blemishes, stains, or light coatings from the floor in preparation for final smoothing. The next phase may be using an 80-100 grit progressing all the way up to 1500 to even 3000 grit. With each successive pass the concrete gets smoother and shinier.
Concrete may be polished wet or dry and chemicals may be used to densify or harden the concrete producing a glossier, harder and better overall surface.
The final product is an ultra smooth, high-gloss finish which requires no sealing or waxing. Polished concrete can make any concrete flooring surface look great!
