Concrete overlays, also called micro-toppings or skim coats, are quickly gaining popularity in the world of architectural concrete by providing an alternative to acid staining old concrete.
Concrete overlays are designed to resurface existing concrete that is damaged or not suitable for staining or coloring.
The first step to applying a concrete overlay is prepping the existing surface. There are many surface preparation methods depending on the condition of the surface and what type of material that will be installed. Preparation methods include grinding, shot blasting, scarifying, and acid washing. Once the surface is prepped and cleaned a primer is generally applied.
Priming the surface allows for better adhesion of the overlay to the existing surface. It also seals the surface so off gassing and bubbling do not occur in the new surface.
Once the surface is prepped and primed the overlay is ready for installation. |
