Usually when applying an overlay the existing concrete surface has a crack or several cracks in the concrete flooring slab.
Although the concrete overlay materials are very flexible if the concrete slab or base cracks the overlay will generally crack as well.
To address this issue, during the floor preparation process the existing cracks are "chased" or ground out and a flexible epoxy or urethane filler will be poured into the crack welding the crack back together. Patching material is applied over the repaired area so shadowing won't occur in the new overlay material.
To prevent the cracks from coming back, expansion joints are cut as close to the old cracks as possible to give the slab room to move. In essence "straight" cracks are created in the design. |
